There
are really two major search resources on the Web.
There are search engines, which use automated
"spiders" to "crawl" the web and
index pages. The results of these indexes are stored
in the search engine's database and the engine uses
it's own proprietary ranking algorithm to determine
the order of page rankings when someone searches for a
keyword or phrase.
Then
there are the Directories, which are human edited
collections of websites, divided into categories for
the user. The most popular of these is Yahoo.
Once
your keyword analysis is complete, the first step
in the search engine optimization process is
manual submissions to these all important directories.
Why is this our first step? Simply this. Yahoo alone can account for 40% of all your
search engine traffic. This number can vary with the
intended target of your site, but the fact remains that successful directory submissions are the
foundation of your search engine optimization strategy.
This
step becomes even more important when you take into
account the fact that many of the most popular search
sites have become a hybrid of a directory and a search
engine. Being included in their directory usually
dramatically increases the relevance of your site in
any searches.
