Google Calendar Arrives

  • Apr. 18, 2006

Google has released Google Calendar, a new shareable online calendar and I must say that it is actually pretty cool as it lets you organize your hours, weeks and months with relative ease.

There are some great features, including:

  • Gmail integration;
  • Reminders (sent right to your mobile phone if you would like);
  • Invitations (so that friends and family can be invited to events that you have listed on your calendar);
  • And, even calendar sharing (where you can view other people's calendars to plan future events).

It is really easy to set-up (you just need to have a Gmail account). The best thing of all is that it is free. You can use Google Calendars in either Firefox or Internet Explorer browsers. Note that you must have JavaScript and Cookies enabled on your browsers.

Once you have set-up Google Calendar, you can start organizing your days, weeks, or months. You are also able to do a search for friend's calendars, holiday calendars, or public calendar information. With Google Calendars you can even import event information in iCal or CSV (MS Outlook) format. You can also scroll the calendar months in advance (I went as far as 2008).

After scheduling an event, if you have specified a location, you can receive map details through the incorporation of Google Maps. You can use the "Privacy" option, if you want to control the visibility of individual events on your calendar. Note that if you make an event public, it will appear in the search results of any relevant Google Calendar search.

I've just started to experiment with Google Calendar, but from what I have seen thus far, I think that it's a pretty handy feature. For more information on Google Calendar, check out the Google Calendar Overview.
