Excite@home Sells Excite.com Portal

  • Nov. 15, 2001

After two years of owning the Excite.com portal, parent company Excite@Home plans to sell it to InfoSpace. The price tag for Excite.com is 10 million dollars, much less than the original 7.8 billion dollars Excite@Home paid for it. The deal would see the Excite portal given to iWon, a rival portal that uses online contests to draw web traffic. iWon will receive the assets from Excite, and InfoSpace would manage the directory and search functions of the new Excite.

The Excite.com sale is subject to bankruptcy court approval. This means it would be possible for another company to bid on the assets. The sale will not include technology assets, or employees. These are being retained for use in the Excite@Home net business. Excite@Home filed for bankruptcy status earl in October, and assets began to be sold.

Although the Excite.com portal is faltering financially, it still receives visitors. August 2001 reports indicate that 28.7 million unique visitors use the services of the Excite.com portal. This places the portal 7th in the line of traffic generators like Yahoo.
