Capsule Comments

Overture is based on a pay-per-click (PPC) Model where site owners bid for the Top Position for the keywords they want to rank for.  They only pay when a user searches for the Keyword and clicks on the link.  The average cost-per-click (CPC) is $0.20.   Partners using Overture listing on their own Engines include Yahoo, Alta Vista, MSN, Hotbot, Lycos, Ask Jeeves and Netscape.

Submission Notes

  • They offer a Search Term Suggestion Tool which helps with the selection of words to bid on.

  • They have a $50 initial deposit that is non-refundable and will be applied to clickthroughs or to the minimum monthly spend.

  • Each account has a $20 minimum monthly spend. There is a minimum bid requirement of $0.05 per clickthrough.

  • They offer $99 and $199 service packages where they will do the work involved to make sure your bids are current and you're targeting the most appropriate words.

  • For Keywords that don't meet the $0.10 minimum bid, Overture will display results from Inktomi (their paid inclusion service is recommended to help with site exposure their).

  • Here's a list of Overture approved third party bid management tools and services: BidRank, Dynamic Keyword Bid Maximizer, Epic Sky, GoToast, PPCBidTracker, PPC Management, Send Traffic, Sure Hits

Recent Developments

In February and March 2003 Overture made some big acquisitions. They purchased Search engines Alta Vista and FAST. They also introduced a Click Index™. This index score reflects how well each of your listings is performing relative to your competitors, while taking into account your position. Your score is displayed as a meter made up of up to five bars. The number of bars corresponds to you listing's click-through performance as follows: Five bars - Well above average, Four bars - Above average, Three bars - Average, Two bars - Below average and One bar - Well below average.

Overture notes that, a Click Index score of one appears in red, indicating a listing that is significantly underperforming and likely to be removed. So that your traffic remains uninterrupted, Overture recommends revising your title and description to improve performance if your Click Index score is two bars or below.
