Capsule Comments

Hotbot displays some web results from the Inktomi search portal. It's directory comes from the Open Directory project (see article), and the Featured Site listings are powered by Overture's Pay-per-click model.  Some listings come from their partners Lycos or Direct Hit.

Submission Notes

§        Inktomi Paid Inclusion Service: Is done through Lycos or Inkitomi Paid Inclusion Services.  Annual Membership with Lycos is $18.00 and the Annual Cost per URL is $12.00. This will give you page acceptance notification and your site is guaranteed to be included within 48 hours.

§        A Free submit is available at Hotbot.

§        Inktomi will spider your site, but needs text links to crawl inside the site as it can't read image maps.

§       Keywords in titles, metatags and body text all add to a site’s relevancy. Site popularity also adds to a site's relevance as Direct Hit actively monitors site popularity and these are incorporated into the top 10 results in Hotbot. Shorter Pages with prominent keywords seem to be favored.

§       Search results for common keywords and phrases are being combined with DirectHit listings. These search results are coming from the click popularity based DirectHit engine. These results from Direct Hit disappear after the first 10 listings and then they are replaced by Inktomi results. Searches powered by DirectHit will have a "Powered by DirectHit" noted on the bottom of the page.

§        Keyword stuffing, hidden text, irrelevant keywords and submitting identical pages are considered spamming and will be penalized
